Well I think the universe is a combination of chaos and order. Joyce did it beautifully in Finnegan’s Wake in coining the word ‘chaosmos’ which contains the word chaos and the Greek word cosmos which means order. Chaos and Order. The universe is a mixture of both. The Chinese say Yin and Yang. The sub-genius says something and nothing. The discordians say hodge and podge. Whichever way you want to put it, I prefer chaos and order. There’s a continuous dance of order out of chaos and chaos out of order and the chaos is the exciting and the frightening part. The order is the soporiphic and sometimes even more dangerous part because order is generally – so far in history generally comes from above. And the people above are not the sweetest and kindest people at all, as Tolstoy pointed out in The Slavery of Our Time… the desire to rule others does not come from benevolence, it comes from a desire for power and the lowest traits of human nature. I wish I could quote Tolstoy exactly, but I forgot the whole quote. Anyway, that’s the thought anyway. I didn’t get the words exactly right. All you have to do is look at the rulers throughout history. Take Abraham Lincoln, the most sentimentalized of all of our presidents. He didn’t want to free the slaves. He was forced to do it. He declared Marshal Law, he suspended the Constitution – he was a dictator!
